DJI's Action 2 Camera Adds Magnets--and Fresh Flaws

WIRED

Drone maker DJI is no stranger to great and small cameras and lenses. The company's drones capture some of the best aerial footage around, which is why DJI's first stab at an action cam--the Osmo Action--was a hit. It was more or less a GoPro clone, but it added a full-color front screen, a feature GoPro copied later on. For its second take on the genre, DJI appears to have cast a fond eye at another competitor--Insta360, which pioneered an interchangeable lens system on an action camera. DJI's GoPro clone innovated in some really clever ways, but the new Action 2 is less compelling. On paper, its specs are solid.

Insta360's upgraded Go 2 action cam will have a 'Minions Edition'

Engadget

Following a couple of solid 360 cameras, Insta360 is back in the action cam space with yet another "world's smallest action camera," the Go 2. While this thumb-sized magnetic camera bares a strong resemblance to its predecessor, it's actually a little bigger and comes with many handy upgrades. Most notably, the camera now supports much longer clip lengths -- up to 10 minutes with FlowState stabilization or up to 15 minutes with basic stabilization. This is a much welcomed change, considering the original Go had a mere 30-second limit per clip at launch, with the assumption being people would only need to shoot bite-size clips (a 60-second mode was added later on). Now that the time limit is practically gone on the Go 2, users naturally have more creative freedom. Other notable changes include a much improved click button which is now placed on the front side, along with a standalone run time boosted from the old 20 minutes to 30 minutes (1440p30 basic stabilization video).

Xiaomi's latest US-ready devices include an action cam

Engadget

Xiaomi has chosen to focus its efforts on dozens of markets outside the US that very few of its products ever make it stateside. It has slowly been bringing its offerings into the country, though, and has started selling four new products on Amazon (with one more to come) just in time for this year's holiday shopping season. The priciest one you can add to your Christmas list is Xiaomi's GoPro rival, the $300 Mi Sphere Camera kit, which is a 23.88-megapixel 360-degree camera that can record videos in 3.5K. Xiaomi has also released a $140 robot builder kit with Lego-like components and electronic parts like high-speed motors and engine that you can use to build robotic dinosaurs, Transformer-like machines or pretty much anything you want. You can write programs for your creations with the kit's accompanying app even if you don't know how to write code.

Nasa releases stunning 'action cam' footage of spacewalk

Daily Mail - Science & tech

NASA has revealed incredible'action cam' footage from a spacewalk on the International Space Station, giving an up-close look at what happens when astronauts step outside the orbiting craft. As the astronauts go about their tasks, it might at first be easy to forget that they are 250 miles above the surface – but, a quick change of perspective revealing the curve of Earth far below serves as a jolting reminder. During the spacewalk, the ESA's Thomas Pesquet and NASA's Shane Kimbrough prepared the Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 for a second International Docking Adapter, which will allow commercial crew vehicles to dock. In March, astronauts on the ISS began to make preparations for the installation of the second of two parking spots for space taxis, known as the International Docking Adapters. New crew spaceships, being designed by SpaceX and Boeing, will use them when they begin flying astronauts to the station in the coming years, as early as 2018.
